Iron oxides-based systems have been the most studied type for two-step thermochemical cycles. They utilize widely available, low-cost materials, and they exhibit promising performance. In case of the simplest system, FeO/Fe3O4 with the use of concentrated solar energy at temperatures above 1600 °C, iron(III) oxide (Fe3O4) can be reduced to iron(II) oxide (FeO) . Followed by the exothermic reaction of iron(II) oxide and water at much lower temperatures, hydrogen and iron(III) oxide are generated.
